Black Swan & Carl Jung

Updated: Feb 21, 2020

In This Article, we're going to discuss the similarities and the connection between Carl Jung and Black Swan (Both the new single and Black Swan 2010 the movie)

First The Movie:

The movie revolves around Nina, a talented ballerina that is been selected to perform "Swan Lake Ballet". The performance contains both the white swan which is the idealistic girl the prince supposedly falls in love with, and also the black swan which is the villain and the exact opposite of the main character, Therefore Nina struggles a lot to perform both acts perfectly, given the huge difference between them.

Carl Jung:

In the movie Nina and in-order to get in touch with both her characters, she unconsciously tries to remove the barrier between her conscious and her unconscious.

Carl Jung's works revolved around this stage. To him, only people who go through a very dangerous journey through their unconsciousness could reach perfection. This process is called ' individuation'. At the beginning of the movie, Nina is represented as a pure girl, who's ego is unfamiliar with her Self and unconsciousness. Other Characters in the movie can give us other evidence of Jungian archetypes. For example, her trainer, who was called Leroy ( Le Roi= King) represents Animus (masculine side of the woman). Instead of getting better through changing, giving her courage and growth through her animus. Instead, she followed Lily (Lilith= Shadow) and became dark and even lost her mind.

Nina’s character reflects this aspect, along with the challenges, difficulties, and creative moments that the inferior function activates in us all. Black Swan mirrors the story of many of us who try to awakens our creativity that leads us in a painful but meaningful journey in which we search for a way to dance with our own shadow.

The turning point in the movie was accompanied with the soundtrack (Confront Your Shadow), after Nina was able to overcome this main obstacle to get in touch with her unconscious, she's able to perform both roles perfectly and show her inner desires. But she lost herself in the process

We need to point out that:

This phase is supposedly the most advanced stage an artist can reach, but at the same time it can be very dangerous if your imagination decides to turn against you rather than being on your side.

(personally, we really hope that the members didn't/ don't reach this point of losing their selves in the process of creating art)

We also would like to point out that Martha Graham talked about the Movie Black Swan in one of her interviews.

After watching the dance, we got a stronger feeling that it IS connected to Fake Love somehow, and slightly Blood Sweat & Tears we will put more effort into both of them.

However, at this point, we don't think this song is related to the BTS universe. We believe it's personal and reflects their feelings and fears.
